breaking news -may 2011 - Shap church has had the lead stolen from the church roof by a local drug addict,the cost to repair the damage is estimated at over £30,000

1899 Restoration of St Michael's Parish Church.Shap

The church was entirely re-built in 1898/99 with the exception of a portion of the north wall and the norman arches in the nave ,the latter ,having been carefully repaired remain in their original state .An extension was added on the south side of the chancel capable of seating 64 people,a baptistery  at the north west end and an organ chamber at the north side of the chancel were also added
The re-opening of the church took place on june 1st 1899,it was opened by the lord bishop of carlisle.
